Tarout Castle stands on Tell Tarout in the middle of Tarout Island, a mound with layers of settlement going back some five thousand years. Most researchers date the castle to the eleventh century, and it was repaired in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Three of its round towers survive, with thick walls of mud, plaster and stone around a courtyard and well, and the ancient spring of al-Awdah lies beside it. The castle has been closed for restoration, but it can be seen from outside and is lit at night.
