The Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah was a roofed meeting place belonging to the Ansari clan of Sa'd ibn Ubadah. On the day Nabi Muhammad ﷺ passed away, in Rabi' al-Awwal 11 AH, the Ansar gathered here to discuss the leadership of the community. Abu Bakr, Umar and Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah joined them, and the meeting ended with the pledge of allegiance being given to Abu Bakr as the first caliph. The events of the Saqifah are among the most discussed in Islamic history, and Muslims of different traditions have understood them in different ways. Today the site is a small garden a short walk north-west of Masjid al-Nabawi, marked by a sign. Nothing of the original building remains.
