The artillery barracks were built in the Ajyad square south of Masjid al-Haram by the governor Osman Nuri Pasha, paid for by military funds and by donations from the leading men of Makkah, to house two companies of artillery. Photographs of the building under construction survive in the Ottoman archives. The building no longer stands. Its site lies about 290 metres south of the Ka'bah, in the Ajyad area.
