The King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kiswah of the Holy Ka'bah is where the black covering of the Ka'bah is made each year. Skilled craftsmen dye hundreds of kilograms of silk, weave it on large looms and embroider the calligraphy by hand with gold- and silver-plated thread, a process that takes many months. The new Kiswah is placed on the Ka'bah each year at the start of the Islamic year. The complex lies in the Umm al-Jud district of Makkah, next to the Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques Architecture, and visits are by prior arrangement.
