When Nabi Muhammad ﷺ left Makkah on the Hijrah, he and Abu Bakr did not head straight north towards Madinah. Instead they went south to Jabal Thawr and hid in a small cave near its summit for three nights while the Quraysh searched for them. Abu Bakr's son Abdullah brought them news each night, his daughter Asma' brought food, and his servant Amir ibn Fuhayrah grazed sheep nearby to cover their tracks. The searchers came right up to the mouth of the cave but did not look inside, and once the search had eased the two set off with their guide on the long road to Madinah. The mountain lies about four kilometres south of Masjid al-Haram and rises steeply; the climb to the cave takes around one and a half to two hours and is best made early in the morning.
