Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, was inaugurated in 2016 in Dhahran, beside the site of Saudi Arabia's first commercial oil well. Its building, designed by Snøhetta, is shaped like a cluster of smooth stones. Inside are a museum with galleries on Islamic civilisation, Saudi heritage, contemporary art and natural history, a large library, a cinema and a theatre, along with seasonal exhibitions. Opening days vary, so it is worth checking ahead.
