The Shalimar Gardens were laid out by Shah Jahan in 1641 to 1642 and are among the finest Mughal gardens to survive. Water was brought to them by a canal from the Ravi, and they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Lahore Fort. The garden descends in three terraces linked by marble cascades, with hundreds of fountains, pools and pavilions of red sandstone and marble along its walled sides. It is on the Grand Trunk Road east of the city. The fountains do not always run, and the garden is most pleasant early in the morning or in the evening.
