The Royal Kitchens, the Shahi Bawarchi Khana, were built in the reign of Shah Jahan behind the Alamgiri Gate of the Lahore Fort. Under British rule from 1849 they were turned into cells and a prison, and they were long closed to the public. Conservation by the Walled City of Lahore Authority and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture began in 2015 and uncovered fresco-covered walls and the original floor levels. The vaulted halls and courtyard were opened in 2019 and now host cultural and Sufi music evenings.
