Shah Husayn (1538 to 1599) was a Sufi of Lahore and one of the great poets of the Punjabi language, whose short devotional verses, the kafi, are still sung today. A disciple of Shaykh Bahlul Daryai, he lived as an ascetic and wandering dervish. His close companion Madho Lal, a young Brahmin who embraced Islam, is buried beside him, and the two are remembered together in the shrine's popular name, Madho Lal Husayn. The shrine is in Baghbanpura, a short distance from the Shalimar Gardens. It is the setting of the Mela Chiraghan, the festival of lamps, held each spring, when lamps and bonfires are lit around the shrine and the surrounding streets fill with visitors. On Thursday evenings there is drumming and dhamal in the courtyard.
