Qutb al-Din Aybak was a Turkic commander of Muhammad of Ghor who became the first Sultan of Delhi in 1206 and founded the line of rulers known as the Mamluk or Slave dynasty. He began the Qutb Minar in Delhi. In 1210 (607 AH) he died in Lahore after a fall from his horse while playing chawgan, an early form of polo, and was buried in the city. The original tomb did not survive, and the present small white marble tomb over the grave was built by the Department of Archaeology in the 1970s. It stands in a small courtyard off Aibak Road in the Anarkali bazaar, a short walk from the Lahore Museum, and is open to visitors through the day.
