The Kardalan mosque was founded in 1906 by Shaykh Habib al-Qurayni in the village of Kardalan, north of the Ashar district, as a centre for Islamic study. It was first built of reeds, mats and palm trunks, with woven mats for its floor, in the manner of the old riverside villages of Basra, and was rebuilt in 1962. Today it covers about 700 square metres and can hold more than 500 worshippers. The Eid prayer here is a tradition the people of the area have kept for generations. It stands among the narrow lanes of Kardalan, so it is easiest to reach on foot from the main road.
