The Iraq Museum is the national museum of Iraq, founded in the 1920s and moved to its present building in the Allawi area of Karkh in 1966. Its collections cover the whole history of Mesopotamia, from the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians and Assyrians to the Islamic period. The galleries include Assyrian winged bulls and reliefs, Sumerian statues and cuneiform tablets, and a series of halls on Islamic Iraq with Abbasid woodwork, ceramics and manuscripts. Tickets are sold at the entrance, cards rather than cash are usually needed, and photography without flash is allowed.
