Sayyid Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥasan al-Muthannā carried one of the most distinguished lineages in the household of the Prophet ﷺ. His father was al-Ḥasan al-Muthannā — the son of al-Ḥasan al-Mujtabā ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib — and his mother was Fāṭima bint al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, the daughter of the martyr of Karbala. This made Ibrāhīm the grandson of both al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn through his two parents — a convergence of prophetic lineage that was exceptionally rare even within the ʿAlid family. His father al-Ḥasan al-Muthannā had himself been present at Karbala, wounded in the battle, and was among those taken captive afterward before eventually being released. Ibrāhīm thus grew up in a household that had lived through the defining tragedy of early Islamic history at the closest possible proximity. He was known by two kunyās — Abū Ismāʿīl and Abū al-Ḥusayn — and was among the Ḥasanid sayyids who settled in Iraq. His brother ʿAbdullāh al-Maḥḍ and the wider family of al-Ḥasan al-Muthannā were central figures in the Ḥijāzī–ʿAlid networks of the early second Islamic century, a period of considerable pressure and surveillance upon the descendants of ʿAlī under both Umayyad and early Abbasid rule. Ibrāhīm came to rest in Kufa, a city deeply connected to his family's history — the city where his great-grandfather ʿAlī had governed, prayed, and been martyred, and from which the call to Karbala had gone out to his grandfather al-Ḥusayn. His maqām in the Kinda district of Kufa sits within that broader sacred landscape, a quiet marker of a lineage that passed through some of the most consequential moments in the story of the Ahl al-Bayt.
