Hashim Muhammad al-Baghdadi (1917-1973) was one of the most celebrated Arabic calligraphers of the 20th century, often called the last of the classical masters. His copybook of the Arabic scripts is still used to teach calligraphy across the Muslim world, and his work adorns mosques in Iraq and beyond. He is buried in the old cemetery beside the Abu Hanifa mosque in Adhamiya, close to the graves of Abu Bakr al-Shibli and Ma'ruf al-Rusafi.
