The mosque of Sultan al-Ashraf Barsbay was built in 1437 in al-Khanka, about fifteen kilometres north of Cairo. The town grew around a khanqah founded there by Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in the fourteenth century. The mosque is the best-known landmark of al-Khanka, where it is called the Ashraf Mosque, and it is still in use for prayer.
