About Pompey's Pillar (Serapeum)

Pompey's Pillar, known in Arabic as Amud al-Sawari, is a column of red Aswan granite about 27 metres high, raised in 297 AD in honour of the Roman emperor Diocletian. It stands on the hill of the Serapeum, the great temple of Ptolemaic Alexandria, and it is the tallest ancient monument left in the city. Around the column are two granite sphinxes, the remains of the Serapeum and its underground galleries. The site is in Karmouz, beside the Amud cemeteries and a short walk from the Catacombs of Kom al-Shoqafa.
