The Amud cemeteries are the historic Muslim burial grounds of Alexandria, spreading around the hill of Pompey's Pillar, whose Arabic name, Amud al-Sawari, gives them their name. Generations of the city's scholars, saints and families are buried here. The cemeteries are entered through several gates on Abu al-Darda Street and the roads around it, with the Omari Mosque and the maqam of Abu al-Darda near the main entrance.
