The Sakakini Palace was completed in 1897 for Habib Sakakini Pasha, a businessman of Syrian origin. It stands on the site of an old lake where eight roads meet, in al-Zahir. Its design mixes European, Ottoman and Islamic elements, with Rococo ornament on the facade, and it has some fifty rooms over five floors. It passed to the state after 1923 and has been under restoration in recent years, with plans to open it as a cultural centre.
