This obelisk was raised by King Senusret I around 1950 BC at the temple of the sun at Heliopolis, one of the great religious centres of ancient Egypt. It is the oldest obelisk still standing in its original place. It is 21 metres high and carved from red granite, and it stands in a small open-air museum in al-Matariyya, the district built over ancient Heliopolis.
