Nakhl was a fortified station on the old Egyptian Hajj road across central Sinai, where pilgrim caravans stopped for water on their way to Aqaba and the Hijaz. The fortress was built in the Ottoman period on the site of earlier halts. Its walls stand in the small town of Nakhl in central Sinai.
