This castle stands on a small coral island in the Gulf of Aqaba off Taba. Salah al-Din took the island from the Crusaders in 566 AH and rebuilt the fortress to control the sea route and the land road to Ayla and the Hijaz. The restored walls, towers, mosque and cisterns spread over the island's two hills, with views across the gulf. It is reached by boat from the shore, and the waters around it are known for snorkelling.
