The Meidum pyramid, near al-Wasta in Beni Suef, was built in the time of Sneferu and is one of the earliest attempts at a true pyramid. Its outer casing collapsed, leaving a tall stepped core rising from a mound of rubble. Visitors can go down a steep passage into the burial chamber. The site is quiet and well guarded.
