Memphis was the capital of ancient Egypt for much of its history, founded around 3000 BC at the point where the Nile valley meets the Delta. Little of the city survives above ground, and its remains lie beneath the fields and palm groves of Mit Rahina. The open-air museum displays a colossal limestone statue of Ramses II lying in its hall, an alabaster sphinx and other statues found on the site. It lies a short drive from Saqqara, about 20 kilometres south of Cairo.
