This museum holds the works of Mahmoud Mokhtar, one of the founders of modern Egyptian art, who passed away in 1934. It was set up by the state in 1938, and his tomb lies within it. The building was designed by the architect Ramses Wissa Wassef and displays some eighty-five of his works in bronze, stone and marble. It stands on Gezira Island, facing the Cairo Opera House.
