The madrasa of al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub was built in 1242 to 1244 by the last great Ayyubid sultan, and it was the first madrasa in Cairo to teach all four schools of Sunni law. After his passing in 1249 his widow, Shajar al-Durr, added his domed tomb beside it. Only part of the madrasa survives, with its tall minaret above the passage that once divided its two wings. It stands on al-Muizz Street at the Bayn al-Qasrayn stretch, near the Qalawun complex.
