This site began as the house of Sa'id al-Su'ada, a servant of the Fatimid caliph al-Mustansir, and later housed the viziers Tala'i ibn Ruzzik and Shawar. In 1173 Salah al-Din turned it into a khanqah for Sufis, the first in Egypt, and it became one of the most famous Sufi houses of Cairo. Little of the old building survives, and the present structure is later. It stands on al-Gamaliya Street, near the khanqah of Baybars al-Jashankir.
