Sayyida Zaynab bint Ali, granddaughter of the Prophet ﷺ through Sayyida Fatima al-Zahra, was born in Madinah and stood beside her brother Sayyiduna al-Husayn at Karbala. Egyptians have honoured this mosque as her resting place for centuries, and her shrine near Damascus is also honoured as hers. Cairo knows her as Umm Hashim and al-Tahira, and her mawlid is one of the largest gatherings of the city's year. The present mosque dates from a rebuilding in the 1940s, and her shrine stands beneath a dome inside the prayer hall. The busy square and district around it take her name, and Mazarat Misr records that the scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Aydarus, who passed away in 1192 AH, is buried beside her.
