Shayban al-Ra'i, Shayban the Shepherd, is remembered in early Sufi literature as an unlettered herdsman of deep piety, and stories tell of Imam al-Shafi'i and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal visiting him and learning from his answers. He is honoured in the Qarafa beside the grave of al-Muzani, north of Imam al-Shafi'i.
