Isma'il al-Imbabi traced his lineage to the Companion Qays ibn Sa'd ibn Ubada al-Ansari. His father Yusuf followed the path of Ahmad al-Badawi and later succeeded Abd al-Muta'al, and Isma'il led the order while his father was still alive, gaining a great following. He passed away in 890 AH, and the district of Imbaba on the west bank of the Nile takes its name from him. His tomb stands beside his mosque in Imbaba, and his father Yusuf lies with him.
