Shaykh Ahmad al-Arusi was a Shafi'i scholar who served as Shaykh al-Azhar from 1778 until he passed away in 1793. He founded a family of scholars: his son Muhammad and grandson Mustafa also led al-Azhar. He is buried beside the mosque of Ahmad al-Uryan in Bab al-Sha'riyya, on the street that bears the family name.
