Sidi Yusuf Abu al-Hajjaj al-Uqsuri was born in Baghdad around 550 AH to a family descended from Sayyiduna al-Husayn and settled in Luxor, where he became its patron saint. He passed away in 642 AH. His mosque was built high on the ruins inside the court of Ramesses II in Luxor Temple, and it is reached by a flight of steps. His mawlid, with its procession of boats, is the great festival of Luxor.
