Al-Fustat was the first Muslim capital of Egypt, founded by Amr ibn al-As in 641 around the mosque that bears his name. It grew into a great city and was burned in 1168 by the vizier Shawar to keep it from the Crusaders. Excavations have uncovered the foundations of houses, streets and water systems, and many finds are shown in the Museum of Islamic Art. The site lies east of the Amr ibn al-As Mosque, near the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.
