The Cairo Tower was built between 1956 and 1961 on Gezira Island and, at 187 metres, was for many years the tallest structure in Egypt. Its concrete lattice shell was designed to recall a lotus plant. An observation deck and a revolving restaurant near the top give views over the Nile and the whole city, as far as the pyramids on clear days. It stands in the gardens of Gezira Island, near the Cairo Opera House.
