The Cairo Opera House opened in 1988 on Gezira Island as the home of Egypt's National Cultural Centre, replacing the old Khedivial Opera House that burned in 1971. It was built with help from Japan. Its main hall and smaller theatres host opera, ballet, symphony and Arabic music, and the grounds hold the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art. It stands in Zamalek, near the Cairo Tower.
