The al-Juyushi Mosque, also known as Mashhad al-Juyushi, was built in 1085 by the Fatimid vizier Badr al-Jamali, the 'amir al-juyush', on a spur of al-Muqattam overlooking the city. Its purpose is not recorded in the building, and it is usually taken as a memorial to his victories or a watch post with a place of prayer. It is a small stone building with a dome over the prayer niche and a square minaret, one of the oldest in Cairo, with fine stucco inside. It stands on the hill above the southern cemetery, with wide views over the city.
