About Sultan Mehmed al-Fatih Masjid & Vranduk Fortress

Vranduk is a small fortress town on a rock above a narrow bend of the river Bosna, north of Zenica. Its medieval fortress guarded the main route into central Bosnia and was known as the gate of Bosnia. It passed to the Ottomans when Sultan Mehmed II, al-Fatih, conquered the Bosnian kingdom in 1463. Below the citadel stands the mosque dedicated to Sultan Mehmed al-Fatih, also called the Emperor's Mosque, which local tradition dates to the time of the conquest. It is a small mosque and is still in use. The fortress has been restored with a small museum and is a national monument, and the village lanes around it keep their old character.
