The Šarena Masjid, the Colourful Masjid, is the best-known mosque of Travnik. A mosque has stood on this spot since the sixteenth century. It was enlarged in 1757 by the vizier Ćamil Ahmed Pasha, burned in 1815 before the work was finished, and was then completed by Sulejman Pasha Skopljak, from whom it takes its other name, the Sulejmanija. Its walls are painted inside and out with flowers, cypresses, vines and calligraphy, and the prayer hall stands on an upper floor above a row of small shops, an arrangement found in very few mosques in Bosnia. Its minaret is older than the rest of the building. The mosque stands in the old centre of Travnik, a short walk from the Plava Voda springs and the fortress.
