From 1699 to 1850 Travnik was the seat of the Ottoman governors of Bosnia, and it is still known as the City of Viziers. Several of the viziers who passed away while serving here were buried in the town. Their turbes stand beside the main street in the centre of Travnik, small turbes whose graves are marked by tall turbaned headstones. They are a reminder of the century and a half when this small town was the political capital of the province. The Šarena (Colourful) Masjid and the fortress are a short walk away.
