The madrasa of Elči Ibrahim Pasha was founded in 1705-06 by the vizier who then governed Bosnia from Travnik, and for three centuries it has been one of the leading Islamic schools of the country. Like Bosnia's other madrasas it was closed after the Second World War, and it reopened in 1994 after more than fifty years. Today it is again a four-year Islamic secondary school, teaching both boys and girls, and its library holds a valuable collection of old manuscripts. The madrasa stands below the fortress near the Plava Voda springs, in the old heart of Travnik.
