On 16 April 1993, during the war in central Bosnia, Croat forces attacked the Bosniak village of Ahmići in the Lašva valley near Vitez. More than a hundred civilians were killed, including women, children and the elderly, homes were burned and the village mosque was destroyed. The massacre was later tried before the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague. The memorial and graveyard stand in the village beside the rebuilt mosque, and the names of the victims are recorded there. Each year on the anniversary people gather to remember them. It is a short drive from the main road between Travnik and Zenica.
