Al-Asha'ir Mosque in the centre of Zabid is traditionally linked to the Companion Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and the Ash'ari tribe of the Tihama, and is counted among the oldest mosques of the town. It was for centuries one of the teaching mosques that made Zabid a city of scholars. The mosque stands among the old houses and markets of Zabid, with a whitewashed prayer hall, domes and a tall minaret. It is separate from the Great Mosque of Zabid, which stands nearby.
