About Al-Amiriyya Mosque and Madrasa

Al-Amiriyya Mosque and Madrasa in Rada'a was built in 910 AH (1504) by Sultan Amir ibn Abd al-Wahhab, the last great ruler of the Tahirid dynasty. It is one of the masterpieces of Islamic architecture in Yemen. The building rises in three storeys with domes, vaults and arcades, and its interior is covered with painted decoration and inscriptions. It was restored over many years by a team led by the archaeologist Selma al-Radi, work that won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007. It stands in the old town near the citadel of Rada'a.
