The Tankiz Mosque was built in 1317 and 1318 by Sayf al-Din Tankiz, the Mamluk governor of Damascus for almost thirty years, who also restored the Umayyad Mosque and built many charitable works in the city. It stands on al-Nasr Street west of the old city. In the 1830s Ibrahim Pasha used the building as military barracks, and it was later badly damaged, but the mosque was restored and its Mamluk minaret still stands. It continues to serve as a place of prayer.
