The Mawlawi zawiyah, al-Takiyyah al-Mawlawiyyah, was the lodge of the Mevlevi Sufi order in Damascus, followers of the path of the great poet Jalal al-Din Rumi. Built in the Ottoman period near the banks of the Barada, it housed dervishes and held the order's ceremonies of remembrance with music and the famous whirling. The building, with its domed hall, is one of the reminders of the many Sufi orders that flourished in Ottoman Damascus, and its mosque is still used for prayer.
