This old madrasa building in Busra al-Sham is popularly associated with the great scholar Isma'il ibn Kathir, the author of the famous Qur'an commentary and the history al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah. Ibn Kathir was born in the Hawran, the region around Busra, around 701 AH before moving to Damascus as a boy to study. The building is a reminder of his roots in this region. It stands in the old town of Busra, a short walk from the Roman theatre and the ruins associated with the monk Bahira.
