Within the Great Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo is a shrine that tradition associates with Nabi Zakariyya, the father of Nabi Yahya. The local tradition holds that a relic of the prophet, often said to be his head, was kept here, and for this reason the mosque is also known as Jami' Zakariyya. The shrine lies in the prayer hall beside the mihrab, enclosed by an ornate grille. It has been honoured by the people of Aleppo for centuries.
