The Great Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo was founded in the early eighth century by the Umayyad caliphs, on the model of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, and was rebuilt after fires in later centuries, notably by Nur al-Din Zangi. Its vast courtyard of patterned stone and its prayer hall make it the main mosque of the old city, and it holds a shrine traditionally associated with Nabi Zakariyya, which is why it is also known as Jami' Zakariyya. Its famous square minaret was built in 1090 under the Seljuks, and the mosque remains at the heart of the souqs of Aleppo.
