Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi was one of the greatest scholars of Islam. Born in the town of Nawa in the Hawran in 631 AH, he studied and taught in Damascus, heading Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyyah, and in a short life of about forty-five years he wrote works still read in every Muslim land, including Riyad al-Salihin, the Forty Hadith collection and his commentary on Sahih Muslim, as well as major works of Shafi'i law. He returned to Nawa shortly before he passed away in 676 AH and was buried in his home town. His grave, which he wished to remain open to the sky, has been a place of visitation for centuries.
