Ibrahim ibn Adham was a prince of Balkh in Central Asia who gave up his wealth and position to live a life of devotion, and he became one of the most famous early ascetics of Islam. He travelled to Syria, worked with his own hands, and joined the frontier campaigns against the Byzantines, passing away around 161 AH. He is traditionally buried in the coastal town of Jableh, in the mosque known as the Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim, after his title as the prince who left his throne. The mosque is a well-loved landmark in Jableh and his story is still told as an example of renouncing the world for the sake of Allah.
