Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik was the Umayyad caliph who ruled from 86 to 96 AH (705 to 715). His reign saw the furthest expansion of the Umayyad state, from al-Andalus to Sind and Central Asia, and he was a great builder, responsible for the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus and the rebuilding and enlargement of Masjid al-Nabawi in Madinah. He passed away in Damascus in 96 AH, and this grave in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery is attributed to him, near the grave of his father, Abd al-Malik.
